15 May 2004--Online Genealogy Methods
This all-day workshop will cover the following topics:
- Online Search Strategies. We'll discuss how to use various search parameters, including
effective use of wildcards, string based searches, and Soundex options where available. Examples will cover difficulties with common and unusual names. This topic will cover two of our sessions and we will look at clever search strategies for several of the largest genealogical databases on the Internet.
- Organizing Your Online Time. We'll look at several ways to organize the way you search, the way you record your results, and the way you analyze information to help you stay as focused as possible while searching for your ancestors online.
- Breaking New Ground. In this session, we'll discuss a strategy that you can apply to looking for information on a new ancestor. While different areas have their unique problems, we'll provide you with a framework that will help you get off the ground running when you've located that new ancestor.
- Integrated into the entire workshop will be several examples from Michael's own research, from areas as diverse as Missouri, Kentucky, Virginia, Germany, and Sweden. We'll see how various online sites and skills were helpful in locating people from these areas in a variety of time periods. The methods employed are applicable to most other areas of the US and Europe.
