Website for Salt Lake City Research Trip

I have set up the website for our research trip to Salt Lake City in May 2008. If you have signed up for the trip, but have not received information about the website we are using, please let me know (mjnrootdig@gmail.com). You might also want to check your spam folder in case the invitation got stuck in there.

I'm looking forward to the trip and hope those who are attending are as well. And we have room for a few more if you've been waiting to make a decision.

Still Room on our May 2008 Salt Lake Trip

Our early registration deadline has passed, but there is still room on our May 2008 genealogy research trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake.

A few of our pages need to be updated to reflect the past deadline, but the other information is all correct and we'd love to have others join us for a week of research in the genealogy capitol of the world. Questions about the trip can be sent to saltlake@rootdig.com.

Early Registration Deadline for 2008 Salt Lake Trip Approaching

The deadline for early registration for our May 2008 Salt Lake City Trip is fast approaching---15 December 2008. There will still be some room after that date, but the price does go up at that point. Payment can be made by check or credit card (using PayPal).

We are looking forward to another great trip this coming May. Remember that pre-trip planning starts late December/early January via email and online and I will also be assisting trip members while we are at the Family History Library as well. More information about our trip can be located on our website. We'd love to have you join us.

What you get on our May 2008 Salt Lake Genealogy Trip

Because I've had several emails about "what the Salt Lake City Research Trip," I've decided to post this to the blog. Hopefully it answers most questions. Those with additional questions can email me at mjnrootdig@gmail.com

What the Salt Lake City Trip registration includes:

The registration includes help with pre-trip planning via a mailing list and website set up specifically for trip members after the first of the year. Additionally trip members are encouraged to email me information on their research problems well in advance of the trip so that together we can plan a set of research tasks for each problem or family that is being worked on during the trip. I have some forms and charts that I email to people to help them get started with this and to help organize them. The mailing list that we set up is a place to ask general questions and learn more about others going on the trip. Participants are encouraged to "write up" their problems and submit them to me as soon as possible after registering so that we can determine if additional information is needed before deciding what items and materials should be researched.

While at the library, there is a morning presentation each day the library is open. These presentations are at 8:00 every morning and last an hour. For the rest of the time the library is open, I am available for consultations, "quick questions," or help with interpreting records, etc. Trip participants sign up for the consultations, which usually last 20 or so minutes and can sign up for more than one consultation once everyone has had an opportunity.

Our trip is in May of 2008. Early bird registration deadline is 15 December 2007. More information is available on our site at http://www.rootdig.com/slctrip.html

Salt Lake City Research Group Trip Dates Fixed

The dates for our trip to Salt Lake City have been fixed on our site. To summarize our arrival/departure dates are as follows.

We are arriving on Wednesday May 14th 2008--with an first meeting together around 5:00 or so in the hotel and a Family History Library orientation at 7:00.

We depart Salt Lake on Wednesday May 21st 2008--that is your checkout date in the hotel. You can arrange for a later departure if you want to research some on Wednesday morning or early afternoon.

There is still plenty of time to register. Our early bird registration for a free room drawing has a deadline pretty soon. But you can still register after that date. We just want people to be able to have plenty of time to prepare and plenty of time to lock in on airline prices before they go up!

Questions about the trip can be sent to me at mjnrootdig@gmail.com

Dates for our 2008 Salt Lake Library Research Trip

There are a few incorrect dates for our May 2008 Salt Lake City Family History Library trip floating around on our site.

We'll get the typos fixed in our next site update late tonight.

And there's still time to enter our drawing for a free stay.

Questions, etc. can be sent to me at mjnrootdig@gmail.com

Why I Like to Prepare Early for a Research Trip

I already have a folder with a "to-do" list for my trip to Salt Lake in May--when I may get some time to work on a few of my own problems.

Right now, I'm keeping a list of "quick lookups" into specific materials I know they have in Salt Lake City or that I've recently found on their card catalog. As I notice a record or document I'd like to get while I am there, I print out the card catalog reference and make appropriate notes and stick it in my folder.

I'm also thinking about the families I want to work on while I am out there. It is still early, but I know there are details about a few ancestors I would like to know. Planning my research is best not done at the last minute. Consequently, I'm working on a research approach for:

I may work on others, but these are my two starting points.

We encourage trip members to fill out a "research outline" on their families they will be working on to help encourage them and to make it easier for them and for me to see what they have done, what they know about their ancestor's environment, etc. It also allows us to have time for a dialogue about their research problem, perhaps to do additional research at home or using sources nearby. In some cases, requesting a document or source from elsewhere will make research significantly easier while at the FHL.
