John Henry Frederich Ufkes

January 27, 1917 - December  2, 2003

CARTHAGE, Ill. - John Henry Frederich Ufkes, 86, of Carthage, Ill., died at his home in Carthage at 3 a.m. Tuesday, December. 2, 2003.

He was born January 27, 1917 east of Basco, Illinois, the oldest child of Frederich (Fred) and  Trientje (Tena) Janssen Ufkes. He married Dorothy Habben on February 7, 1941 in Warsaw, Illinois.

After his marriage he farmed near Ferris until the late 1950s and then farmed east of Basco. He retired to Carthage in the 1980s and spent many winters in Bradenton, Florida.

Mr. Ufkes was a graduate of Carthage High School and a firm believer in education. He served on the Ferris Grade School  Board and the Carthage High School Board, where he was also president for several terms. He was on the board of the former Hancock County Locker Plant in Carthage. John also had a Pioneer seed corn dealership for many years which he had taken over from his father. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Carthage.

He loved sports and played third base for the Basco Bulldogs softball team for many years and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees.

Survivors include: his wife of 62 years; a daughter, Connie Neill and her husband, Keith, of Carthage; two grandsons, David Neill, of Carthage and Michael (Melissa) Neill of Rio, Illinois; two great-granddaughters, Sarah and Katie of Rio, Illinois; many nieces and nephews; two brothers, LeRoy Ufkes of Carthage and Alvin Ufkes of California; and a sister, Ruth Ufkes, of DesPlaines, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, David Lee; an infant daughter, Gloria Ann; and a brother,  Herbert Ufkes.

Burial was at the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery near Basco, Illinois.

Memorials may be made to Blessing Hospice of Hancock County or the Salvation Army.

He will be missed and may he Rest in Peace.
