Ancestry.com
provides online access to a wide variety of United States genealogical
information, including census records, passenger lists, published books,
military indexes, and much, much more. Attendees will have complete access to
the Ancestry.com site for the duration of our workshop and our morning will
provide an overview of what is on the Ancestry site and the afternoon will
discuss effective search techniques, organizing your online search and
determining what offline records complement what is found on Ancestry.com

Using Footnote.com - LEI C37 602 Cost: $40
Footnote.com
offers online access to National Archives microfilm such as Revolutionary War
Service Records and Pensions, Bureau of Investigation Case Files (1909-1921),
Southern Claims Commission Files, and a host of other records. Footnote’s
images are searchable and downloadable and users can interact with other users,
notate images, and much more. Footnote is available by subscription and
attendees will have complete access to the entire Footnote site for the
duration of the workshop. We will see how the images are organized and indexed to
make searching and use of the images as efficient as possible.

USING FAMILYSEARCH.ORG - LEI C53 600 Cost: $40
This
day-long session will focus on what databases are on the Mormon genealogy
website, FamilySearch. Sessions will provide an
overview of the main databases on the site, how to search those databases,
using the site to prepare for a trip, and interacting with other researchers
via the site.

day-long session will focus on land records in the United States. Terminology,
record organization, and land descriptions will be discussed both in state and
federal land states. Search approaches for using land records will also be
covered.

GENEALOGY PROBLEM
SOLVING - LEI C30 600 Cost:

This
day-long series of sessions will focus on general problem solving techniques
applied to family history research. Several detailed examples will be
demonstrated, focusing on how the problem was solved when records were
inconsistent, families provided little information, and some materials were
impossible to locate.

USING
NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGE RECORDS
- LEI C30 601 Cost: $40
This
all-day workshop will begin with a generalized procedure for reading
non-English records. Attendees will see examples in German, Latin, and Swedish.
There will also be time for hands-on work in interpreting church and other
records in foreign languages. you do not need to be
fluent to translate most languages, but you must practice and be patient.

John Neill has been an active genealogist for twenty-five years. He has
researched his children’s ancestry in fifteen states and six foreign countries.
Michael writes a regular column for Ancestry.com and has lectured nationally on
a wide variety of genealogy topics. He leads an annual research trip to the Family
History Library in Salt Lake City and maintains a website at www.rootdig.com
